The Akron Institute was founded in 1970 to provide healthcare related training using hands-on teaching methods. Conveniently located just north of Akron, the school serves students in Summit, Portage, and Stark counties from its campus in Cuyahoga Falls.

The school's Employment Services department helps students develop resumes, and polish their job interviewing skills. Because the programs at the Institute all feature internships where students can practice their skills, graduates are likely to find career related employment.

Diploma Programs and Courses of Study

Dental Assistant

This comprehensive program includes a study of the basics of dental assisting, chairside assisting, four-handed dentistry, and dental office administration. Courses include dental radiography, clinical procedures, and lab procedures. Students also learn computer skills, appointment scheduling, and insurance billing, including ADA Procedure Codes. The program concludes with a six week externship in a dental office.

Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant diploma provides a balance between clinical and laboratory training, and instruction on front-office skills used in a clinic, physician's office, or hospital. After an introduction to health care, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, students receive hands-on training in laboratory procedures, including urinalysis and hematology, clinical procedures, including EKGs, giving injections and venipunctures, and administrative skills, such as insurance billing, bookkeeping, and medical transcription. A six week medical assisting externship concludes the program.

Medical Biller / Administrator

Learn the administrative procedures and practices used in a health care facility, with a special emphasis on medical insurance billing and claims processing. Courses include basic math and accounting, typing and computer skills, medical anatomy and pathology, and medical transcription. Students learn the medical procedure and diagnosis codes used in insurance billing, including CPT, ICD-9, and PDR. They also learn to complete insurance forms used in private practice, Medicaid, Medicare, and Workman's Compensation. In the six week externship, students work in a medical facility where they get to practice the skills they have learned.

Admissions and Financial Aid

Prospective students considering the Akron Institute are encouraged to take a campus tour, and meet with admissions representatives to get their questions answered. Admission is available to high school graduates, or those individuals who have complete their GED. The easiest way to get the process started is by completing the online request form.
