George really likes his job. He's been a registered nurse for over ten years, and is as excited about coming to work today as he was when he graduated college. He took a few minutes out of his afternoon to discuss the ins and outs of being a registered nurse.
"When I was a college freshman, there was only one thing that concerned me about a future career--I didn't want to sit at a desk all day. When it was time to pick my major, I decided to become a registered nurse because it seemed like it was a job where I could help people and get some exercise each day. I was totally right, but I didn't know the half of it back then.
When I graduated college and became a registered nurse, I started working in the emergency room at one of the hospitals in downtown Chicago. Talk about high energy and high stress. We'd get people coming in all night long that had been in terrible accidents, fights, you name it. We had to try to patch these badly injured people up as best we could. I always loved the challenge, and I thrived on how varied each night was. It was impossible to become bored in this job. The best days came when we saved someone's life just in the nick of time. It felt great to be a part of a well-oiled machine that could work efficiently and effectively as the clock was winding down on someone."
