Health Care Career Profiles: Medical Radiography/X-Ray TechnologySarah Johnson splits her time as an x-ray technologist working at a hospital and a private-practice physician's office in Nevada. She entered the field of radiography because she likes photography, and she can work directly with patients without the responsibilities of a registered nurse. Here's the rundown of her typical working day, and her educational path to a career in radiography. "At the hospital my duties vary -- sometimes I'll be doing portable chest x-rays, sometimes I am in surgery or ER. In a private office, I mainly do x-rays, but I'll also help out with whatever is needed -- taking out stitches, putting people in braces or immobilizers. I work per diem, so I work mornings, evening and nights. My shifts run from eight hours to as long as 14 hours. It is common for x-ray technologists to have more than one job. A lot of people are working per diem and have a job on the side for extra money. You have to understand human anatomy to create a decent image -- there is still some creativity in it. I also have to assess the patient's condition. If they are critical-care, we are doing all the work of sliding and moving them, so communication is very important. When orienting the bone or whatever you are taking the x-ray of, you usually get two projections 90 degrees from each other. That is where knowledge of anatomy comes in handy. I graduated from a community college with an associate degree of applied science in radiology. The program includes a lot of anatomy, understanding radiation and the physics behind it, and patient care. I also trained to know what dose of radiation is safe for what body part, and how to adjust for different physical sizes. The program took two years, and the prerequisites took two to three years."
