Like most other high school kids, Tom's first job was bagging groceries at the local supermarket. He quickly earned a reputation for being reliable, and was thus promoted to a job as a checker and eventually landed a coveted shift manager position. While at the supermarket, Tom became friends with the pharmacist. Like everyone else that worked with Tom, the pharmacist liked this hardworking, responsible kid. He told Tom that he could use a pharmacy technician to help him out, and would give him the job if Tom earned his technician's certification.
"Bill [the pharmacist] made me an offer I couldn't refuse. He guaranteed me a pharmacy technician job as soon as I could earn my degree. I thought this was a great deal. I could make a lot more money as a pharmacy technician than I was making as a shift manager, and could earn a pharmacy technician degree in under a year if I worked really hard. I found an online program that allowed me to move at my own pace academically. I worked long hours every night of the week for almost a year. I corresponded via email with my professors, and supplemented my online work with a few weekend onsite classes. I earned my degree on time and have been working for Bill ever since.
As a pharmacy technician, I basically assist Bill with whatever he needs to do. Most of the time, I spend my days measuring dosages, filling bottles, or mixing different chemicals together. Bill checks up on me to see that everything meets his specifications, and always double checks my work before giving anything to a customer. He thinks that I have the potential to be a real pharmacist someday, so it's possible I'll eventually go back to school."
