Health Care Career Profiles: Medical TranscriptionSonja is an aspiring actress living in New York. She recently earned an associate's degree in medical transcription from a distance learning school. Acting and medical transcription may not seem like professions that mix very well, but Sonja couldn't be happier. She works out of her home office and sets her own hours, meaning that she can pay the bills and still make every audition that comes her way. "My first year in New York was definitely a struggle. As soon as I landed a regular paying job, I would get a small part in a traveling show or some off-off Broadway production that would conflict with my work schedule. I had to take these roles, because they allowed me to network with other people in the industry. The shows hardly paid anything, so I found myself getting deeper and deeper in debt.
I talked to another acting friend one day who told me about medical transcription work. She said that she transcribed doctors' aural notes from voice recordings into typewritten computer records. The work was never-ending, and she could do it whenever she had extra time. She mentioned, however, that to become a medical transcriptionist, she had to take some medical courses that taught her the names and meanings of a bunch of technical terms that she would have to understand in their proper context. I thought this type of work could be exactly what I needed. I found an online school that offered medical transcription training programs, and earned an associate's degree in under a year by working very hard in between auditions and waiting tables. After earning the degree, I found a medical transcriptionist job really easily. Now, I make tons more money than I ever did waiting tables, and I can do my job whenever it fits in with my schedule.
