Jenny lives in San Francisco and recently started working as a medical office administrator. She spent a few minutes describing her typical day at the office, and what she did to prepare herself for this career.
"I started working in this medical office just under a year ago. I was lucky. I went to visit my school's career center about a week before I earned my associate degree in medical office administration, and just happened to see this job posting. I called them the same day and had an interview the following week. They hired me on the spot, and I started working for them right away. I work a forty hour week, and have a full benefit package.
Here is a rundown of what I do on any typical day. The first thing I do every morning is check phone messages and emails to see if we have any cancellations in the schedule. After that, I print updated itineraries for all the doctors and put them in their mailboxes. Next, I usually try to tackle a few insurance forms and bills that I'll eventually send to our clients' insurance companies. This paperwork can definitely stack up if I don't keep at it everyday. While I'm working, I'll often field calls from people who want to schedule appointments, and I'll spend some time calling patients to remind them of their appointments.
As far as the training I received in school, I took a number of classes in office management software. The same word processing, spreadsheet, billing, and time management software I learned on is used in this office, so those classes have really come in handy. All in all, this job is very satisfying and I really enjoy going to work everyday.
