Health Career Profiles: Medical AssistantKris Wiese, CMA (AAMA) is a medical assistant in Wisconsin, working with three family practice physicians at a community health clinic. She talks here about her training and her daily tasks as an MA. "I went to an accredited school to become a medical assistant. We had classes, hands-on labs and clinical. We had to test out of all of our skills, like blood pressures and EKGs, before we could do them clinically. After we passed skills, we had to do a six-week externship at a clinical site. I did mine at a medical clinic and rotated through pediatrics, podiatry, lab and general practice, so I gained a lot of experience. I had to pass a test before I could work as an MA. That's how I became certified. To stay certified in my state, I either have to take 60 hours of continuing education credits every five years or pass the test again. I go to seminars and complete self-study modules to get my education hours. Now I work in a clinic and rotate between telephone and clinical duties. When I'm on phone duty, I take care of all of the med refills for all of the doctors, I get the docs their messages, and I triage patients' needs and decide which ones go back to the doctors and which ones I can handle. I also call patients back with messages, handle questions from the pharmacy, and administer injections to patients who come in for flu shots or special injections. I'm responsible for all walk-in blood pressure checks, too. When I'm on clinical duty, I accompany patients to the exam room and take their vital signs. I call patients to let them know how their lab tests turned out and if the doctor wants to make any changes to their treatment. I also help with procedures such as mole removals."
