Health Care Career Profiles: Medical Insurance Coding/BillingJackie Stack is a Billing, Coding and Collection Specialist for a medical center in Pennsylvania. With seven years of experience, she leads a billing department that spans two locations and 15 family practice providers. In addition, the center serves several county prisons, residential treatment facilities and nursing homes while also running its own hospital program. This veteran medical insurance biller/coder shares her typical day and why she enjoys working in this field. "As head of billing, I have five other people who work in my department. During a typical day, we work together to complete a number of different tasks. First thing in the morning, we run the electronic billing. Then, we post all of the auto-post checks, get the mail, open it and post the paper checks. We charge all of the visits completed by each provider the day before. These include office visits and hospital visits as well as the other locations where our practice see patients. We also have to work on denials and the accounts receivables. Patient collections are another task that must be completed. We print paper statements and patient statements and then scan all of our paperwork, such as Explanations of Benefits and reports, into a computer system. Personally, I perform all of the credentialing as well as perform audits and educate the providers and other staff as needed. Finally, I am also the compliance and HIPAA officer. The only education and/or certification that was required for my current position was to become a certified coder. Although not required for my job I have been given many opportunities that have allowed me to further my education and obtain specialty certifications. I also graduated with a bachelor's degree in Health Administration this year. I love my job. My favorite part of my job is that I get to educate and help my fellow employees and the providers in my office. I love sharing my knowledge with others."
