Health Care Career Profiles: Paramedic/EMT Services

Rebecca Sampson, 21, has worked as an emergency medical technician in Nevada for about 18 months. She entered the profession to gain a foothold in the medical field while attending college. Here's a rundown of her typical day, what she likes most about the job, and the training required to work as a paramedic/EMT.

"I usually start at 1800 hours, or 6 p.m. I prepare the bags and sign on, and sometimes I get a call right out of gate. If not, I am posted somewhere. The three different types of calls are Priority 1, 2 and 3 -- we use the lights on priorities 1 and 2. In the city we receive five to 10 calls per shift, and we work 12-hour shifts.

On an ambulance, both an EMT and a paramedic are working. I am an EMT-intermediate. If the call is for anything really serious, the paramedic takes responsibility and the EMT is in charge of doing whatever the medic needs, such as establishing an IV, getting whatever drugs are needed and hooking up oxygen treatments. For things that aren't life-threatening, I talk to the patients and figure out their medical history, the medications they are on and their symptoms.

A lot of calls are for non-life-threatening injuries, but there is always that one patient that really needs our help. I also like that I have a lot of free rein. There is no micro-management.

As far as education, EMT training has three levels:

  1. EMT basic
  2. EMT intermediate
  3. Paramedic/EMT

My class was three months long, two nights a week, for five hours. You have to pass basic to achieve the intermediate level, and that takes another three-month-long class. Paramedic school is a year long, and you go eight hours a day, three days a week -- it is a very fast-paced program."
