Health Care Career Profiles: Health Care AdministratorWith more than 20 years of experience in the medical field, Marshall Maglothin knows what it takes to be a successful health care administrator. He has served as CEO of a large cardiovascular physicians' practice and is currently the administrative director at the heart and vascular institute of a Virginia health care system. He discusses his daily activities as well as what makes health care administration so rewarding. "A typical day is never typical, except for scheduled meetings, which can be four to six hours of each workday. I lead meetings to review our overall heart care operations, improve clinical quality, develop new services for patients and plan with physicians. I attend broader meetings for operations, financial and strategic planning for three hospitals and our regional organization. Due to the clinical workday schedules of physicians, communication and planning meetings that involve them often begin at either 7 a.m. or 6 p.m., so a 12-hour workday is not unusual. Email and phone calls require another two to three hours daily. More than 80 percent of individual communication, especially about operations and planning, is by email. I receive more than 150 internal emails a day. Learning how to use email powerfully is critical for executives. Messages must be concise, objective and factual; and, often, knowing how not to raise issues through email is very important. The rest of my day revolves around unplanned issues: arranging coverage for staff who are sick; implementing progressive discipline of employees if needed; interviewing and hiring; arranging repair or purchase of equipment; and sometimes meeting with patients, families or employees to answer questions or address complaints. I also attend two to four national meetings a year; usually, two are educational professional society conferences and the others are site visits to assess new technology or services. I love information technology and have always been an early adopter. I have fully implemented Electronic Medical Records for several practices and use a dozen management software packages for real-time analysis of our finances, operations, clinical quality and employee management. As for education, I have a Master's in Health Care Administration and an MBA in Finance, both from the University of Minnesota. Due to the expense, I would only recommend one degree; and, for health care, I recommend the MHA from a top program. Health care is about providing the best care possible for patients and their families. Each day, I make rounds not only to keep in touch, but also for my own rejuvenation when I see the incredible care we deliver and the difference it makes. As a health care administrator, I love solving problems and working with people to achieve astounding results."
